During the later months of the year, the cold, wintery chill is on its way and along with that, the sniffles and sneezes of cold and flu season usually follow. In this article, we will look at a few different treatments that you can take to help keep yourself, your family and everyone around you healthy through these cold winter months.
PREVENTING COLD & FLU
WASH YOUR HANDS
This is very important whether you’re a stay at home mum looking after the kids or a city worker sitting at a desk from nine till five. No matter where we are, we all come into contact with countless germs throughout the day. Washing your hands is the best way to get rid of these nasty germs before they get into our system and cause us to experience cold and flu symptoms, so getting into the habit of washing your hands properly and regularly is very important.
You should wash your hands for at least 20 seconds making sure to scrub the backs of your hands, between your fingers and under your nails with soap. Try to dry your hands with a disposable tissue afterwards as reusable hand towels can spread germs if they have been in contact with someone with cold and flu. If you are using a towel, make sure you wash them with an antibacterial detergent regularly.
Try to keep your hands away from your face as much as you can because these germs can enter your body through your eyes and nose.
LIVE A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE
Looking after your own health will help ensure that your immune system stays at its strongest to help fight off cold and flu germs. Simple everyday things like making sure you are getting all the nutrients and vitamins you need from your diet are very important. This will help make sure that your body has fuel for the day ahead and is well nourished. Also, work on getting a good night’s sleep so that your body is able to rest and function properly as well as exercises to help keep your body fit and healthy. Just 20 minutes of exercise, three times a week could help boost your immune system.
DRINK LOTS OF LIQUIDS
We are recommended to drink six to eight glasses of water every single day to flush out any toxins and keep the body (and throat) hydrated. If water is a little bit boring for you, you could try adding a green tea bag or peppermint into your day. Another option is to add lemon and honey to hot water as the lemon contains high levels of vitamin C and the acidity can help soothe any early symptoms of cold and flu, whilst honey is very soothing for a sore throat.
TREATING COLD & FLU SYMPTOMS
GARGLE WITH SALT WATER
If you are suffering from cold and flu and have a sore throat, gargling with a homemade mouthwash of warm salty water can help to bring short relief from the pain. Just be careful not to swallow any of the water.
NUROFEN COLD & FLU TABLETS
If you are looking for cold and flu pain relief, Nurofen Cold & Flu tablets can help ease your symptoms. Nurofen Cold & Flu Tablets contain two active ingredients, ibuprofen and pseudoephedrine hydrochloride which help to relieve the symptoms of cold and flu, such as headache, aches and pains, fever, sore throat and nasal or sinus congestion. Always read the label. Be sure to leave at least four hours between doses and if your symptoms persist or get worse, it’s best to seek medical advice from a doctor.
Don’t let cold and flu slow you down this winter. Look after your body to help ensure that it is in the optimal condition to fight off germs by itself.
