Keeping Fit
Quick tips for feeling fitter
Exercising is an essential part of living a healthy lifestyle. It’s also a great way to make new friends, stay slim, improve your cardiovascular health and boost your energy levels and mental alertness. Whether you’re young or old, you’ve been to the gym before or not, it’s never too late to start making exercise a normal part of your life. Here are some suggestions to help you get more active. Please remember to speak to your doctor before starting any new type of exercise.
Tips on how to keep fit
- Aim to exercise three times a week for 30 minutes - choose mild to moderate activities, such as swimming, walking or cycling. Then, if you can, increase this to between 45 – 60 minutes
- It’s easy to lose motivation when you start exercising after a period of inactivity. So find an activity you enjoy to keep your enthusiasm high. You could also get an exercise buddy to help spur you on
- If the gym’s not your scene, then perhaps join a health club, sports team, a local fitness class or try using a workout video or DVD at home
- Building exercise into the natural rhythm of your day is simple. For instance, you could start walking to the shops instead of driving. You could also use your stairs at home to exercise. Gardening is also a great way to burn calories
- Set yourself a goal, such as doing a fun run or walk to raise money – many charities offer activity ‘challenges’ for people of differing fitness levels and ages
