Osteopathy
Helping the body treat itself
Developed in late 19th century by an American doctor, Andrew Taylor, osteopathy is a manipulative technique that helps rebalance the framework of the body, improve joint mobility and allow proper function of the internal organs.
Osteopaths believe that the body’s structure and function are closely connected. They feel that if there is a spinal imbalance or restriction of movement, not only can it cause pain and discomfort but it may also interfere with internal organ function. And this can lead to a variety of health problems.
Although many people go to an osteopath to help relieve back pain, osteopathy can also help treat:
- Tension headaches
- Migraines
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Joint stress
- Menstrual disorders
- Sports injuries
- Dizziness
- Sinus problems
Cranial osteopathy
Sometimes osteopaths use a technique called cranial osteopathy – which is the gentle manipulation of the skull and the base of the spine. By feeling the movements of the skull, and the membranes inside it, cranial osteopaths say they can pinpoint health problems and correct them with gentle manipulation.
Cranial osteopathy can help treat headaches, tinnitus and head injuries. It’s also a favourite with many new mums, because it’s been known to help ease baby colic.
